Newark Airport Express / Return to JFK

We%26#39;re flying in to Newark on Saturday evening - thinking about getting the Newark Airport Express to our hotel (The Roosevelt on 45th %26amp;amp; Madison). Presume I can either get off at Grand Central or pay an extra $4 to get dropped directly - what are other advisors%26#39; experience of this service?

Returning ollowing Tuesday evening but to JFK - is a taxi the easiest method from the Roosevelt to this airport ?

I%26#39;d say pay the extra $4 and get dropped at your door, who wants to have to struggle with luggage, you%26#39;re not really far enough away from the hotel to get a cab if you get off at Grand Central, but what a hassle, the cab would cost you about $4 anyway. The Newark Airport Express is good.

For JFK I recommend booking a car from Carmel (212 666 6666) or Tel Aviv (212 777 7777) both are reliable and will cost about $40 plus tip and toll, check their websites for current prices. You%26#39;ll end up paying about $55. I just feel that standing hoping to get a cab with your luggage in a busy part of town, when you have a plane to catch is stressful, then if you get stuck in traffic it will be expensive. What if it%26#39;s raining or it%26#39;s rush hour, you%26#39;ll never get a cab then.

What type of food do you like? What do you consider to be inexpensive? If you post back on your preferences, you will get many great suggestions. As to the Edison, have you read the reviews posted here? Recent posters mention mouse problems there.

As for the restaurants,i love italian food,i refuse to sit in a restaurant using a paper napkin! so price range around $120?

Some of my favorite Italian restaurants are nearby. The best southern Italian is at Carmine%26#39;s, on W. 44th between 7th-8th Avenues, but don%26#39;t go with fewer than four starving adults, they only serve family style. And without a reservation, the wait can be literally HOURS!!! There are some wonderful Italians on ';Restaurant Row'; (W. 46th between 8th-9th Aves.). My favorite is Orso (www.orsorestaurant.com), a pretty, rustic, pink marble restaurant... excellent food and service! I also like Becco (www.becconyc.com) though their seating can be very cramped. But their $21.95 all-you-can-eat pasta special is fabulous, as is their wide selection of $25 wines. Another is Lattanzi, which can also be a bit crowded, though I like the seating in their enclosed garden. My favorite there is their artichokes. Yet another good Italian is on W. 50th St., just east of 7th Ave. Osteria Stella is a big, raucous place with a very loud bar scene, but the food%26#39;s really good!

Other Italians nearby are Osteria al Doge, and Trattoria dell%26#39;Arte, both very good. And don%26#39;t forget the best pizza in NYC is at John%26#39;s, on W. 44th just east of 8th Ave., in a converted church.

It%26#39;s not Italian, but Virgil%26#39;s BBQ (www.virgilsbbq.com) has the best BBQ in the city, and is just a couple of blocks from your hotel. Not expensive, either!

100$ bills

Since you all made clear that it%26#39;s not advisable to bring 100$ bills into NYC, I have a small problem.

I ordered some dollars with my bank, and a week later I got them, but all notes of 100$... I asked if they had some smaller, but they didn%26#39;t.

Now, I%26#39;m coming to NYC with my 100$ bills, and I really DON%26#39;T wish to draw attention, like you all said...

Ok, maybe I can spend it to change it, but then still I%26#39;m drawing attention...no?

What about change-offices or at a local bank?

Can I change my 100$ bills there?

Eleanor---Yes, you can go into a bank and have a teller change your $100 bills for smaller ones. I would suggest getting $20 bills. Sometimes, the clerks at the front desk of your hotel can change them for you, too. It won%26#39;t hurt to ask anyway!

I always have lots of 100 dollar bills with me on vacation and never had a problem, not in LA, not in Florida, not in DC, not in NY.

Don%26#39;t worry about this to much, take 1 and leave the rest in your hotel safe if you have one.

I never take more than 1 bill with me, and use it as soon as I can to get smaller bills.

Of course you can%26#39;t go around flashing the cash, but that goes for every city or country in the world.

Not only will a bank change your bills but the front desk at your hotel should do the same (at NO charge) Using $100s to pay for a meal, in a dept store etc. should be no problem. Just don%26#39;t try to use one in a taxi or at a local deli. I recently had guests from the UK visiting and they came with $100s. It wasn%26#39;t a problem. You just have to know where to avoid using them (smaller shops etc.)

Subway clerks won%26#39;t accept anything larger than a $20.

I%26#39;d suggest Union Square Cafe (mentioned in the article) or Gramercy Tavern. Even better would be Beacon. These all have very good food but not quite so formal. While Cafe Boulud is less formal than Daniel, it%26#39;s still an haute cuisine experience.

thanks nywhiz...liked the article!. But my kids are more young people than kids and my daughter looks more like a sophisticated 17 year old!! and often eat in v smart restaurants in London. We have them well trained so we don%26#39;t have to miss out on good food when we are on holiday!

Certainly give it a go. I would just suggest checking in at chowhound.com the ';foodie'; website. Since it%26#39;s so expensive, I want to make sure it%26#39;s still up to par. I haven%26#39;t been in some time and I%26#39;ve heard it may be starting to get ';tired.'; Everyone really loves Gramercy Tavern. Just a heads up.

These snow days are great, they give me a little extra free time during the day. Only problem is I will now have to work late into the night... But c%26#39;est la vie...

I thnk Cafe Boulud is a bit more casual than Daniel, but still upscale. They have a great many vegetable offerings, (even a vegetable tasting menu) so it is a good place to bring people with veggie leanings.

Judging by your comments, it sounds like your family is used to fine dining. Cafe Boulud, Union Square Cafe and Gramercy Tavern which whiz mentioned, are also first rate.

DB Bistro Moderne right on the same street as your hotel (in the City Club hotel). $39 prix fixe before the theater. French. For after theater, Joe Allen (American and celeb spotting), Orso (Italian and celeb spotting) or Lattanzi. Whichever has room. Or if you want steak Del Frisco or Ilo at the Bryant Park Hotel.

Belvedere Hotel - Early Check-in

First trip to New York in early April. I have booked the Belvedere with two friends.

I called the hotel to ask about possible early check-in (my flight arrives at 9am, my friends are arriving after 5pm), and I guess I called during a ';busy'; time, as the person on the other end said she wasn%26#39;t sure and hung up!! Hmmm- not much for good customer service, but otherwise, has any ever done this? Or if not, do they have a secure baggage check so I can leave my suitcase and wander about until I can check-in?

Belvedere Hotel - Early Check-in

Every hotel will store your baggage til they have a room for you. Don%26#39;t worry. If your flight arrives at 9, it could be 10-11am by the time you get to the hotel. They might have a room available by then.

The big issue will be is the first room available the best room they%26#39;ll have. If you%26#39;re staying for more than a few days, I%26#39;d make sure you get the biggest room possible, rather than the first one that%26#39;s open. Have fun.
