I have read a few mentions of The Gates. Can someone explain what are The Gates please

The Gates

The gates was a project started in 1979 and was placed for 16 days in central park. There were thousands of orange ';gates'; (more like a piece of orange cloth hanging between two orange poles) spread out through central park.

They have been dismantled now, but it wasn%26#39;t that special... at least for me.

The Gates

It was the attempt of a self-proclaimed artist and his wife to hang thousands of orange shower curtains throughout Central Park during the month of February with the City%26#39;s permission after about four previous City administrations had turned the idea down. It was quite controversial. Some people bought the hype. Others thought it obscured, if not defaced the natural beauty of the park. The good news is that the laundry is back in the hamper where it belongs.
