We are thinking about taking the subway to get to our hotel from JFK. I know we need to take some other form of transportation to get to the subway 1st. Is this safe to do? Also, we are staying at the holiday inn martinque. Has anyone had any experience with this hotel?

From JFK you take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station. From there you can take an ';E'; subway into the city, or you can take the Long Island Railroad from here as well.
Both the ';E'; subway and the LIRR stop at Penn Station, which is fairly near your hotel. The Airtrain and subway will cost you $7.00. The AirTrain and LIRR will cost $11.75, but be a lot quicker.(I think LIRR fares are increasing March 1, so it may be different) As long as you are not coming in late at night this is completely safe.
