Hi!
My husband and I are coming to NYC for 6 days in April--it will be a first for us so we are thrilled. I have been researching every detail of the trip, including restaurant menus as my husband is an extremely picky eater! I want to try all of the ';famous'; nyc foods but have to make sure he can eat happily as well. Anyway, I was reading the deli menus and saw they list things like lettuce and tomatoes as sides. Does this mean sandwiches come plain and you have to pay $3-4 extra for a tomato?! They also list cheese as a separate category. Hope this doesn%26#39;t seem like a silly question--just trying to get a sense of how things work in the city.
Thanks so much!
? about delis!
It depends on the place. First understand the term deli is used loosely to mean 2 different kinds of places. There are generic ';delis'; that are basically places used mostly for take out that serve everything from morning coffee and bagels plus sandwiches etc. This is the ';I went to my local deli for breakfast.'; Then there%26#39;s the classic NY deli that%26#39;s known for deli meats (ie pastrami, corned beef etc.) like the Carnegie, the Stage etc. Sometimes you do pay extra for tomato on a sandwich. Not usually for lettuce though. At a place like the Carnegie where portions are huge, it%26#39;s common to order one sandwich, share it and order extra bread (which you pay for) but then you both get a full sandwich. If you add cheese to a sandwich, yes it%26#39;s extra. There are usually also ';set'; sandwiches on the menu that may include cheese. Here%26#39;s the Carnegie sandwich menu. Some of the combo sandwiches have swiss cheese on them.
