The Michelangelo (midtown) or The Lucerne (upper west side)?

I%26#39;m taking my husband to NYC for a surprise birthday trip this August. I%26#39;ve narrowed my hotel search to the two above. Can anyone who%26#39;s has at least a passing familiarity with both recommend one over the other? We%26#39;ll be staying 7 days and doing theatre, museums, landmarks - all the things tourists who only get to go to this wonderful city once every 20 years do. Thanks in advance.

You%26#39;ve chosen two good hotels. As much as I love the Upper West Side, I might recommend the Michelangelo based on what you%26#39;ve said, but you can%26#39;t go wrong with either.

I live in NY and went here with my husband for the first weekend away from our children ever. (BTW I mean the Michelangelo) Anyway, we had the best weekend away from home and felt like this was a real vacation even though we live 1/2 hour away from the city. We saw a show and went to Ben Bensons for the best steak in the world. Of course travel downtown is so easy. Sat. night we went to Nobu and just had the most awesome time. The hotel is very nice. I know that people here have complained about service, but we found it awesome. Rooms are big and bathrooms big and really clean.

Have fun.

Both are great. The biggest difference is location. The Lucerne is in more of a residential area. The pros to that, a bit less touristy, lots of local restaurants. The negative, you%26#39;ll have to travel a bit to get to the theater, but if it%26#39;s nice weather, you could certainly walk. If you%26#39;re only going to the theater once or twice, I think I%26#39;d lean toward the Lucerne. It%26#39;s a bit easier to get to the park from there and you can also hang out at the 79 st Boat Basin. If you want to go to the theater more often, pick the Michelangelo.
