Hi everyone, just wanted to say thanks for all the great advice on these forums - they making planning a trip to a city that has so much to see so much easier!
My husband and i are coming to New York in June and through the advice picked up in these forums i%26#39;ve started planning out our trip...wondered if you%26#39;d mind taking a quick look through this rough/first draft - any advice would be welcome.
N.B. this is our second trip to NY and that%26#39;s why we aren%26#39;t doing the SOL/Ellis Island/Circle Line Cruise/Helicopter Trip/etc., as we did those last time - and while i%26#39;d love to see them all again we need to make the most of our time in NY (only five short days) and want to see different elements of the city than we saw last time
We may try and squeeze in the ESB one evening as we went through the day before but this depending on queuing time...
Here goes-
Arrive Newark Sat 11th June 12.20pm, take a cab to the Salisbury Hotel (west 57th st) and unpack.
Could you tell us where the nearest subway is to our hotel, as we didn%26#39;t use the subway at all last time and intend to do so in June.
Explore area near hotel - maybe get a %26#39;snack%26#39; at the Carnegie Deli - take a walk to B%26amp;HPhoto to get a digital camera (on the map this seems to be near Madison Sq gardens - is that right?)
Just wander around for rest of afternoon - back to hotel changed for evening.
Take subway to Greenwich (advise as to which train/line etc greatly appreciated as the subway map seems v.confusing:o) La Lanterna Di Vittorio on MacDougal St for a meal and then just a wander round the village - probably stopping off at a few bars (any recommendations - we like a laid back/trendy scene - i%26#39;m very fond of people watching :o))
Sunday 12th
Breakfast /Brunch at Restaurant Florent in meatpacking dist. (how far/easy is this to walk to from our hotel without getting lost? would we be better on the subway? we didn%26#39;t make it any lower downtown than Madison Sq. Gardens on our last trip so aren%26#39;t sure of the distance to these areas).
From there we intend to wander down to Soho, Little Italy and Chinatown and then to visit St Paul%26#39;s (expecting this to take all day).would like to catch the Staten Island ferry - will this be anywhere near our locatation (i.e. half an hours walk tops?) or would we be better moving this to tomorrow?
No planned meal for this evening just planning on calling in somewhere as we go.
Monday 13th
Light breakfast in hotel. Subway (again which one?) to Brooklyn - wander around Brooklyn Heights and the promenade area. Lunch at Grimaldi%26#39;s. Then walk back across the bridge to burn off some of the pizza!
From there explore South Street Seaport and the East Side - go to Tenemant Museum (it%26#39;s here that we could possibly put the SI Ferry if it didn%26#39;t fit yesterday).
Subway back to hotel to change. Night out - dinner at Balthazar - need to make reservations beforehand - do you have any recommendations for bars/clubs around that area for after our meal?
Tuesday 14th
Morning in Central Park (maybe hire bicycles - anyone done this? recommended for someone who hasn%26#39;t really rode a bike since she was ten!?) We visited CP on our last trip but that was over christmas so i%26#39;m really looking forward to seeing it in another season - are there any must see%26#39;s in June? I dragged my husband down to the gardens at the far end last time as our guidebook said they were beautiful and not to be missed - it wasn%26#39;t till i got there i realised everything was dead it being winter and all! So we%26#39;ll have to go back there to see it in summer :o)
Back to hotel in afternoon - via some shops.
Change for evening - pre theatre cocktails in Rainbow Grill to see the view. Broadway show (either Hairspray/Sweet Charity or Spamalot - need to decide which one soon as poss and get this booked!). After show dinner at Joe Allens - would you recommend booking this or just turning up with it being after the show?
Wednesday 15th June
At the moment this is our %26#39;do as we please day%26#39;! - we might decide to do the National History Museum or a bit more shopping or just hang out. Early evening go for a meal and a few drinks in the Tavern Room at the Gramercy Tavern (no reservations are taken for this - so i%26#39;m thinking that the dress code will be more relaxed as we%26#39;ll still be in our %26#39;daytime%26#39; / casual clothes - think that%26#39;ll be ok?)
Back to hotel to pack - early(ish) night :o( our last one!
Thursday 16th
early pickup from hotel at 6.30am - our flight on to Nassau is at 9.30, will this pick-up be early enough to get to Newark and through security etc?
If you%26#39;ve managed to read all that - many thanks for persevering :o) any comments/advise v.v. welcome. I promise to keep any further posts much much shorter.
Thanks,
Liane
June Trip
Hi Lianemary2,
My family may be going to NYC in June (our travel plans not 100% yet). If you don%26#39;t mind me asking, how much are you paying for your room at The Salisbury? It%26#39;s one of my choices.
thanks,
AA
June Trip
Hi Clutz80.
i%26#39;m really sorry - i have no idea what price we got for the Salisbury - it was all booked as one package through a travel agent, the flights, our hotel in NY and our hotel in the Bahamas; so i didn%26#39;t take much notice of the breakdown prices. I%26#39;ll see if it gives a breakdown on our paperwork tonight and will post again tomorrow.
Liane.
You%26#39;re in excellent shape regarding subways. Just go over to the Columbus Circle area (59th St) and you%26#39;ll find the A, C and E lines as well as the 1, 2 or 3 lines. Based on your itinerary those are pretty much all you%26#39;ll need.
To get to Greenwich Village take the A, C or E to West 4th Street. That should be closest to MacDougal. If you want the West Village, take the 1, 2 or 3 to Christopher Street.
On Sunday, Florent is too far to walk. Take the 1,2 or 3 train to 14th Street. Walk 1 block west to 9th Avenue and 1 block south to Ganesvoort. Turn right. You can walk from the restaurant into Greenwich Village, across to Soho and then Little Italy and Chinatown. Save the ferry for another day. For dinner in Little Italy, try Il Cortile for something a bit fancier or Pellegrino%26#39;s for pasta, both on Mulberry. Or for Chinese, try 10 Pell, Joe Shanghai (right across the street from 10 Pell), or Big Wong%26#39;s on Mott. For dim sum, try New Green Bo.
On Monday, take the #2 or 3 train to Clark Street Station, the first station in Brooklyn. Wander %26#39;round the Heights and visit the Promenade. Then on to Grimaldi%26#39;s and the Bridge.
There are other subway lines not far from your hotel. The N and Q are on 57th %26amp; 7th and if you walk over to Lexington Avenue you have access to the 4, 5 and 6.
Your hotel is really quite well situated for access to subways. And by the way, book reservations for Joe Allen%26#39;s, even for after the show.
Thanks for your help with the subway Ruffian, now i know which trains to use it should be easier to work out (the maps seem so confusing)...and your suggestions for restaurants on the Sunday are great - cheers.
